Become a STEM ambassador

MHA+ skills and workforce development

Do you want to inspire the next generation, give something back to your community and help fill the growing skills gap? Why not become a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) ambassador?

STEM ambassadors promote the study of, and careers in, STEM subjects.

Why become a STEM ambassador?

You could:

  • engage, inspire and enthuse young people about STEM
  • encourage young people to consider STEM careers and qualifications
  • help improve academic achievement in STEM subjects
  • help develop employability skills in young people
  • give teachers and young people a unique perspective on how STEM subjects are used in the world of work

STEM ambassadors can benefit by:

  • enjoying a sense of achievement
  • facing a different challenge from their everyday work
  • challenging stereotypes that young people have about STEM subjects and related careers
  • gaining a fresh perspective on their day-to-day work, seen through the eyes of students
  • helping to make a difference in their local community
  • developing new skills and confidence

What do STEM ambassadors do?

STEM ambassadors can get involved in a range of activities, all of which can have an impact on young people’s learning and enjoyment of STEM. These include:

  • giving careers talks or helping at careers fairs
  • providing technical advice or practical support to STEM projects in the classroom
  • supporting projects in after-school STEM clubs
  • judging school STEM competitions
  • speed networking with pupils, parents and teachers
  • devising or delivering practical STEM experiments or demonstrations, help with devising practical activities is available
  • helping students with mock job interviews

STEM Learning’s regional and local network keeps STEM ambassadors up to date with the wide range of opportunities and requests received from teachers and schools.

You can choose to volunteer for any of the activities featured in regular emails and updates, or come up with your own ideas. We only ask that you commit to a minimum of one activity a year. Many volunteers do a lot more, and often get involved in a number of STEM events and initiatives. We appreciate and value every contribution made.

If you’re over 17, with skills or an interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, you can register as a STEM ambassador. The most important qualities in a STEM ambassador are enthusiasm and being a positive role model for STEM subjects and careers.
